Dear Readers,

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is taking shape. It won't be long now and we will be able to celebrate the official opening of the most ambitious, most complicated and most expensive transport structure in the history of mankind. Then Europe will shift a little bit closer together. And the railway, as the most environmentally friendly means of transport of the 21st century, will gain a clear lead over the road.

When the time comes, we will also be proud of ourselves. Because engineering from our firm will have made no small contribution to the success of the project. Our share is the "worm", a giant rolling factory, which is pulled along behind the tunnel drilling machine and acts as a platform for the lining of the tunnel tubes. The formation is 600 metres long – twice as long as the height of the Eiffel Tower - and it has an imposing weight of around 1900 tonnes. Hardly any other project so impressively presents our expertise in tunnelling, railway engineering and special constructions, our engineering know-how and our continuous striving for perfection in our workmanship.

Yet word of where our strengths lie has not spread only since our commitment deep under the Swiss Alps. Solutions from MSD have long since been deployed all over the world. Not only on tunnel construction sites, but also in railway depots and railway stations, in factories, in dams and wherever large and small loads have to be moved, supported and secured. I invite you to see for yourself on this site and acquire an overview – of who and what we are, what we can do, what we are proud of and anything else you should know about us.

Please contact me if you need constructive support for your next project. Even if it isn't the longest railway tunnel in the world.

Yours
